I have been on edge for months now, I think we all have.
Watching this election unfold day by day, the struggle
between the old and the new, the fearful and optimistic. I was
born in flint Michigan and moved to Arizona when I was 10.
I remember driving across the county in our Pontiac station wagon,
looking out the window as each day brought a new terrain, and
a new emotion. This was 1965 and you could still pull off the highway
and take the back roads that lead you somewhere. Small towns, big
cities, big skies, mountains meditating, desert sands like spilled sugar,
a botanical dream scape with cactus flora and fauna I had never witnessed
before.
Flint was a booming town when we left it behind. My father a doctor,
enjoyed the big years GM, Body by Fisher, Buick the factories were
purring like the fine engines they manufactured. Blue Cross Blue Shield -
everyone was getting paid feeling secure. Why I would even hold the
milk mans hand down the driveway after his delivery, these were different
times.
Out west there was lot's of room to roam. I road horses up in the mountains,
drove out to Pinnacle Peak restaurant wearing one of my dads old ties because
I heard they cut them off and hung them from the rafters, big steaks thrown
onto an outdoor grill, it took a half an hour to drive out there, everything
was an adventure.
That was when I was a little girl. These journeys stay with me everyday
and now that I have a love of my own and my own darling daughter,
I hold these memories close to my heart.
Travels have shifted. Simplicity is hard to find, but the best of this
country still remains.
And I love it dearly.
I don't want to move to France if things go wrong.
I want to stay here and do all i can do to make this
place fun and romantic and happy.
I know you are all voting today
and will do the right thing.
I think Barack and Michelle are great people,
they love each other and their two daughters.
I see the humanity there, and more than ever,
this is what we need to get back and move forward.
Wherever g-d may be if he/she isn't integrated into our
own souls then it can't work. We cannot wait for a higher
power to do the heavy lifting for us, we've got to do it for
ourselves.
Remember to vote no on Prop 8, love now belongs to us all!
Meditate on bringing the highest consciousness to those
who need it most.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my Uncle Milty. It usually happens this time of year around the High Holidays. He was the one who made sure I carried on the family tradition of going to shul, admitting my sins and asking for forgiveness before G-D. My father, being a Holocaust survivor abandoned his religion way before I was born. So it was left to the uncle.
This year, however, my wife had to drag me to Yom Kippur services. Why? Well, maybe it’s because I’ve seen the people I respected the most, all of the bubbes and zaidies who put up with bigotry, racism, religious zealotry and Nazis abandon the basic tenets of what it means to be a Jew.
It is impossible for me to justify how “my people” will not vote for Barack Obama because he has a funny name, or, worse, to paraphrase Jackie Mason, is a “fancy schvartze.”
Sandra has just given an interview with the Huffington Post commenting on her recent performances in Washington DC and her cancellation from a recent Boston event.

Theater J kicks off the 2008-2009 season with a limited engagement of Sandra Bernhard’s one-woman show, WITHOUT YOU I’M NOTHING, running September 9-28, 2008.
This is first stop on the worldwide 20th anniversary tour of the show that launched Sandra Bernhard’s career in the 1988. Performances will take place in the Aaron & Cecile Goldman Theater at the Washington DCJCC.
There is one full-priced preview on Tuesday, September 9, at 8:00 pm and press night is Wednesday, September 10, at 8:00 pm. Tickets, which range from $45 to $60, are available at boxofficetickets.com or at (800) 494-TIXS. Tickets for patrons 25 and under are half-price for all shows.

To mark that twentieth anniversary, Sandra Bernhard’s coming to Manchester Opera House on Friday 9th May to open Queer Up North 2008: it’s the world premiere of a new version of Without You I’m Nothing, backed by her band, The Rebellious Jezebels and supported by the wonderful Tina C.

Let's end with a bang. A Salon reader in Germany who signs himself Bougle Fragts sent this amazing video of Sandra Bernhard and Tom Jones on Bernhard's 1992 HBO special, "Sandra After Dark." (WARNING, as per Perez Hilton: If you are easily offended, then do not click here!)
Fragts says of the clip, "This is like when sex was provocative instead of being a given, and Bernhard still is. So much so, Tom Jones can't keep up and looks too slow." Bernhard's parodic, scantily clad, randy showgirl turn is a mind-boggling demonstration of sheer sassy athleticism.

Attitudes is the Sandra Bernhard of lesbian bars: A little bit dirty and a little bit crass. Untamed and wild-eyed, teeth smudged with lipstick. When legs curl around its go-go cage bars it exudes sexiness, but it can intimidate, too, what with its raised-seating perimeter, which allows patrons to judge the moves on the scuffed dance floor. It has a cult following and a sense of humor; it's comical in its abrasiveness. It owns its kitsch and smirks at those who take themselves too damn seriously. It probably made out with Madonna in the '80s. It makes a commentary on sexuality but then breaks into a Britney Spears medley before the crowd grows weary. It's an excuse for bad behavior. It's St. Louis' best lesbian bar.

Stop! Wasn’t that weird? That kind of TV doesn’t happen anymore. Primates nibbling on guests, you don’t see that these days.
